Girls' Generation is considered a major figure in South Korean culture and the Korean Wave. They are credited in South Korea as the lead female group who, following an influx of male idol groups in the Korean music industry from 2002 to 2007, shifted the public's attention back to female idols. The group was labeled the "Asian version" of British girl group Spice Girls by CNN, and Tyler Brûlé of the Financial Times named them one of the ten most recognizable features of South Korea in 2011; they were the only musical act to make the list. The group's international expansion and success, according to Nikkei Business, is the musical equivalent of Samsung's global trend.
